How To Make Your House Feel Like Home

You know that feeling you get when you walk into your favorite store or coffee shop or even the home of a family member? That nostalgic feeling that transports you exactly where you need to be mentally and emotionally in that very moment? Now let me ask…

Does your home bring you those same feelings?

You may answer yes or no, or perhaps even sometimes, all of which are understandable.

Life gets busy and it can be hard to keep your home as the safe place you need it to be-or that it once was. That’s ultimately what it is all about; making sure that your home is the safest place for you, your friends, and your family to be. It is creating the environment that lets you fully be you.

If your home doesn’t bring you feelings from your favorite place(s), then read on and lets get it to that point!

To help you, we are going to have to answer some questions to reflect on why these awesome places make you feel all warm inside.

Let us begin!

1. What is it about your special place(s) that make you happy?

Is it a memory that flows back to you or is it the type of people that surround the environment?

Really sink into your senses when you are thinking about this one, and don’t be afraid to close your eyes and meditate on the question. Think of smells, the feel, music, even the lighting, and let yourself be transported.

2. In what ways can you incorporate your answers into your home?

If it is the smell of coffee or fresh pastries that drives you wild, is there a way for you to get that into your home? Whether you grab yourself a treat once a week or do your own baking, or maybe grab yourself a delicious smelling candle! Get creative and dig deep so you can think about how you can bring whatever it is those places have that get you into your happy place right into your home.

3. What things in your home stress you out or do you view as a problem area?

Listen, we all have them. For some of us it’s keeping up with laundry and for others it's feeling like we are covered in clutter. How we go about tackling these menaces will vary depending on what they are, but here are some tips to help you get started.

First thing before moving forward, you will want to make sure you have taken the time to reflect on the three questions above. They should each have direct answers. Think of those answers as your road map to your final décor destination. The clearer and more precise you are with each one, the easier it will be to get to and enjoy your homes new vibe.

So, you have your questions answered, now it’s time to organize…

I cannot begin to tell you how many people I help with their homes that say they are overwhelmed because of all of the things they have out and don’t know what to do with. Essentially, they feel like there isn’t enough space for all of their stuff.

In some cases this may be true, but most of the time there is plenty of space it’s just not being utilized well.

When you go to reorganize (or just organize, let’s be real) your closet, pantry, garage, and all the other nooks and crannies of your home, odds are you will find things you don’t mind parting ways with and may also realize that some things can be rearranged.

For example, switching different things around from different drawers and shelves may end up being a better utilization of the various spaces. It may take trial and error and moving a few things to a few different spaces, but when you get it right there is no better feeling!

Ultimately everything in your home should have a place where it lives. If it doesn’t, I would highly recommend considering whether or not it is actually a need and how often it is being used. While there are always exceptions, I have noticed that we often prioritize the things that we use the most, and in prioritizing, those things usually have a home. Just something to keep in mind.

Now that you have answered the three questions, have organized your home (or at least thought about it), it is now time to ask yourself...

Do you know what you like?

I know this might seem like an odd question to ask but in my experience, it is necessary because many people actually don’t. It is very easy to get lost in everyday trends and fall into loving what everyone else loves in the moment. While that might work for some people, what I find is that there is almost always something lacking to the heart of the home when that is the route taken.

When you are considering what type of style you like when it comes to your home you have to do some self-reflection of your style and hobbies outside of the home. This also helps with practicality in the placement of items and décor.

Consider color pallets, patterns, and some of your favorite places. Maybe you love a southwestern flair or mixed metals with a rustic touch. Take the time to think about what you gravitate to when you are out shopping or are looking through books, magazines and scrolling online. You may surprise yourself to fully dive into the fact that you love antique pieces or a new modern feel.

Now your roadmap to your newly decorated home is complete!

You have spent a good time reflecting on the questions and considerations that have been recommended to you, therefore you have all of the direction you need to make your space truly yours.

All of this questioning, reflecting, and answering is meant to help you dive into a space you haven’t had your home be. It is a way to help you get hands on and build the confidence to know that you can decorate your home and have it be as fabulous as you are!
